Mor Gregorios Syrian Orthodox Student Association – Southeast Region
Summer Regional Retreat
June 30-July 2, 2017
The annual regional retreat of the Southeast region of MGSOSA was hosted by St. Mary’s MSO Church Atlanta, Georgia from June 30th to July 2nd, 2017. The theme verse was James 4:14, “What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while, and then vanishes”. The retreat began on Friday with evening prayers and opening sessional remarks by Very Rev. Bobby Joseph Corepiscopos and concluded with a youth fellowship dinner. The retreat resumed on Saturday with morning prayers. Rev. Dn. Subin Shaji (St. George, Charlotte) led the first session in which he focused on the theme verse. The youth were reminded that our lives are temporary like “mist” and must be used to grow closer to God, as St. James reminds us in his epistle. Following small group discussions, Rev. Dn. Josh Thomas (St. Mary’s, South Florida) led the second session in which he talked to the youth about living a sacramental life and finding one’s calling as it applies to the theme verse. The day was filled with small group discussions, team building exercises, and praise and worship sessions to create an environment of fellowship and unity in Christ while also emphasizing the importance of applying the lessons learned from the sessions in daily life. With God’s grace, over thirty-five youth members spanning from North Carolina, Georgia, and Florida participated in the retreat.
By the grace of God and through the presence and spiritual guidance of Very Rev. Bobby Joseph Corepiscopos, Very Rev. Joseph C Joseph Corepiscopos, Rev. Fr. Mathai Puthukkunnathu, Rev. Dn. Subin Shaji, Rev. Dn. Josh Thomas, and Rev. Dn. Basil Mathai, the retreat was successful and fruitful. Programs for the weekend concluded on Sunday with Holy Qurbana and a closing session. The Regional Senior Coordinators, Ms. Renie George (St. Mary’s, Atlanta) and Ms. Shelby Cherian (Mar Gregorios, Tampa), and Junior Coordinators, Ms. Christy Saji (Mar Gregorios, Tampa) and Ms. Geethu Edathara (St. Mary’s, Atlanta), deserve special recognition for their dedicated efforts towards planning a well organized and fruitful retreat. During the closing session, the hard work and dedication of Ms. Renie George and Ms. Shelby Cherian were especially commended since they will be stepping down from their Senior Coordinator positions.
We ask for your prayers for the incoming Senior Coordinators, Ms. Christy Saji and Ms. Geethu Edathara, and our spiritual leaders as they work to bring our youth members closer to our Lord through similar gatherings at the regional and parish level. Through the intercession of St. James, Mor Gregorios, and all the Saints, we ask for God’s blessings upon us all.
